First Looks: MacBook Pro with M4 chip

If you are looking to level up your laptop game, there’s no better time than now. Apple just launched a fully upgraded MacBook Pro lineup, supercharged by the M4 family of chips: M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max. You may be thinking, how much better can the MacBook Pro get? Well, you’re about to find out.

What’s in the Box

The 14″ MacBook Pro with M4 (with Nano-texture display) comes with a 70W USB-C Power Adapter, a USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable (2m), and an Apple Cloth.

M4 Chip

The M4 chip pushes the performance on the MacBook Pro to the next level. With 4 high-performance cores and 6 high-efficiency cores, the M4 chip powers up to 1.8x faster multithreaded CPU performance than M1. The M4 chip features up to 10-core GPU that includes dynamic caching and hardware-accelerated mesh shading. The second-generation hardware-accelerated ray tracing engine is also up to 2x faster. M4 supports up to 32GB of unified memory, and provides 120GB/s of bandwidth – which is a 17% increase from the prior generation.

Connectivity

The new MacBook Pro with M4 comes with 3 Thunderbolt (USB-C) ports (2 on the left, and 1 on the right) that provide up to 40Gb/s of throughput to different compatible accessories. The MagSafe 3 port gives you the perfect experience of quickly attaching and detaching of the MagSafe 3 charge cable that also supports fast charging. The 3.5mm headphone jack can automatically modulate voltage levels to match the impedance of connected headphones.

The HDMI port allows for easy connection to a TV or an external HDMI display without adapters. It supports TVs and displays with 4K resolution of up to 240Hz, or 8K TVs with up to 50Hz. The SDXC card reader can support the SD 4.0 standard and latest UHS-I and UHS-II SDXC cards.

Display

The Liquid Retina XDR display has a P3 wide color gamut, and supports up to a whopping 1 billion colors. This level of accuracy allows photographers, designers, and creators to experience smooth gradients in images, and easy calibration for any kind of workflow.

ProMotion powers refresh rates up to 120Hz and based on the motion of the onscreen content, the refresh rate will be automatically calibrated accordingly. This grants you more fluid and smooth scrolling, better responsiveness, and smoother motion content.

This is how incredibly HD the display resolution is, at full brightness on the nano-texture display

With up to 1,600 nits of peak brightness, the Liquid Retina XDR display delivers Extreme Dynamic Range which brings content to life like never before. The MacBook Pro’s display pushes 1,000-nit full-screen brightness for SDR content in bright outdoor conditions, and 1-nit full-screen brightness in dark, or low-light conditions.

Battery Life

Apple silicon enables the most power-efficient design throughout the Apple ecosystem, and the MacBook Pro has the same level of performance whether plugged in, or on battery. The 14″ MacBook Pro with M4 has a battery with 72.4 watt-hours, meaning, you get up to 24 hours of video streaming and up to 16 hours of wireless web browsing. The M4 family of chips powers the 14″ MacBook Pro models to have the longest battery life, ever, in a Mac.
