‘Wonderlust’: iPhone 15 Family

Coming to you live from the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino with a round up of the iPhone 15 lineup that was just announced to the world at ‘Wonderlust’ earlier this morning.

iPhone 15 Lineup & USB-C

From exciting new colourways to stunning new features such as powerful camera upgrades and USB-C charging ports – the new iPhone 15 lineup is pretty solid. The shift away from the Lightning connector may dump a lot of our past investments in Lightning cables down the drain – but this is a positive change as the USB-C port makes it easier to integrate into one’s ecosystem. With the USB-C connector, one can now use the same cable to charge iPhone, Mac, iPad, and the updated AirPods Pro (2nd gen). If you ever run out of juice, you can also charge up your AirPods or Apple Watch directly from iPhone with the USB-C connector.

Enough said – let’s dive in, shall we?

iPhone 15 & iPhone 15 Plus Summary

With the all-new sleek design featuring a colour-infused back glass, new smooth contoured edges, Dynamic Island and a brand-new 48MP main camera with 2x Telephoto and USB-C charging port – the cute colours of both the iPhone 15 & iPhone 15 Plus caught our eye instantly.

iPhone 15 & iPhone 15 Plus – Design

Coming to you in both 6.1″ and 6.7″ display sizes, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus encompasses the Dynamic Island complete with interactions with important alerts and Live Activities so that you don’t have to keep opening up the separate apps while multitasking on your iPhone.

The Super Retina XDR display is absolutely stunning – with the peak HDR brightness reaching up to 1,600 nits, video content and games will now pop with all the vibrancy and all the details will be automatically highlighted and brought to the forefront. What’s cooler is that the peak outdoor brightness has been calibrated to reach up to 2,000 nitsno more squinting while using your iPhone while trying to read an email while walking back to the office from lunch in the harsh afternoon sun.

iPhone 15 & iPhone 15 Plus – Camera

The 48MP main camera is a super upgraded version of the previous 12MP main camera on the iPhone 14 & iPhone 14 Plus. This is pretty exciting, considering how some people prefer to not go Pro – the output of the main camera now gives you an all-new 24MP high-res output, and with computational photography, the output comes at a reasonable file size ideal for storing and sharing.

An additional 2x Telephoto option gives you the freedom to leverage up to 3 zoom levels – 0.5x, 1x and 2x – a first on an iPhone dual-camera system.

Gone would be the days where you’d have to manually slide over to the Portrait mode while in your Camera app – you can now take portraits with the main camera. Cries in easy Portrait photos.

iPhone 15 Pro & iPhone 15 Pro Max – Design

Now, this, this is pretty revolutionary (and one we’ve been waiting for quite some time now to be honest). The all-new iPhone 15 Pro (6.1″) & iPhone 15 Pro Max (6.7″) comes decked out in swanky new aerospace-grade titanium that is said to be strong and lightweight such that these are the lightest Pro models. Ever. The contoured edges are smooth, making the device comfortable to handle. It felt pretty light and easy to use with one hand.

We got the chance to touch and feel the iPhone 15 Pro Max in White Titanium – and admittedly, while the titanium finishes do give the iPhone 15 Pro series a sleeker look, the fingerprints are quite visible after handling the devices for a bit. Good thing here is that the visible fingerprints disappear after a while – so it shouldn’t be a bother at all.

With beautiful contoured edges and a customisable Action button – this takes the iPhone 15 Pro experience to another level. The single-function switch used to toggle between ring and silent modes is now swapped out for the new Action button – giving you the flexibility to quickly access your camera, flashlight, activate Voice Memos, Focus modes and more, in addition to switching from ring to silent mode. The simple action of press-and-hold gesture accords you the freedom to customise it to your preference – which is quite a welcome change but would take quite a fair bit of getting used to.

iPhone 15 Pro & iPhone 15 Pro Max – Performance

With the A17 Pro chip, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max is now calibrated in such a way that the overall performance is quicker and more seamless. A17 Pro comes with a dedicated AV1 decoder which allows for way more efficient and high-quality videos across streaming services, and the new USB controller enables USB 3 speeds on iPhone for the very first time – supporting higher transfer speeds and video output up to 4K at 60 fps HDR.

iPhone 15 Pro & iPhone 15 Pro Max – Gaming

With hardware-accelerated ray tracing, which is 4x faster than any software-based ray tracing, smoother graphics now grace the iPhone 15 Pro series.. Which means that game titles such as Resident Evil 4, Death Stranding and Assassin’s Creed Mirage (and more) which were previously only available on gaming consoles / PC / Mac – is now available on the iPhone 15 Pro series. How cool is that!

iPhone 15 Pro & iPhone 15 Pro Max – Camera

The all-new 48MP main camera allows one to switch between popular focal lengths – 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm. You can now easily pick one as a new default so that the iPhone 15 Pro can automatically leverage your favourite focal length the next time you snap a photo. iPhone 15 Pro goes up to 3x zoom, and iPhone 15 Pro Max goes up to 5x zoom at 120mm. This is pretty amazing especially for those who loves to snap close-ups or action shots from a distance. Cool.

Similar with iPhone 15 & iPhone 15 Plus, there is no need to manually slide over to the Portrait mode to snap portraits of one’s loved ones or pets. You can even switch focus points on a photo after it has been taken. Time to snap some Portrait shots of my furkids with the main camera.

iPhone 15 Pro & iPhone 15 Pro Max – Additional Camera Features

Night mode and Night mode portraits are now further enhanced with the Photonic Engine and enabled by the LiDAR scanner, to extract sharper details and more vibrant colours. You can now also get the best quality video with significant improvements to low-light video and Action mode – thanks to A17 Pro. Later this year, there will also be a new update to iPhone 15 Pro – to allow users to record spatial video for Apple Vision Pro. Can’t wait to try out Night mode.

iPhone 15 Pro & iPhone 15 Pro Max – Connectivity

With the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, Precision Finding for Find My friends is made even easier for iPhone 15 users to share their location and find each other in bustling environments. I always lose my friends especially when we’re out as I tend to get distracted and wander off, so this is gonna be super helpful.

Both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max supports USB 3 for quick data transfer up to 10 gigabits per second – a whopping 20x faster than before.

iPhone 15 Pro & iPhone 15 Pro Max – Pricing & Availability

Both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will come in 4 incredibly sleek new finishes including Black Titanium, White Titanium, Blue Titanium, and Natural Titanium.

iPhone 15 Pro comes in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage capacities and starts at S$1,649. iPhone 15 Pro Max comes in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage capacities and starts at S$1,999.
