First Looks: iPhone 16 Pro & Pro Max

Last week, Apple launched the iPhone 16 lineup at it’s Fall Event, and we’re as excited as everyone out there to finally try it out. If you’re looking to trade up to the iPhone 16 Pro lineup, here are some features and upgrades you should know about.

iPhone 16 Pro Max Look & Feel

Overall Look & Feel

The new Pro lineup brings larger display sizes to the market, alongside the thinnest borders of any Apple product. The iPhone 16 Pro is now available in 6.3″, and iPhone 16 Pro Max comes in 6.9″ – the largest iPhone display yet. Don’t be fooled by the size, the 6.9″ iPhone 16 Pro Max still feels very light in my palm. Comparing it with iPhone 15 Pro Max, the iPhone 16 Pro Max looks just a little bigger, but not that much heavier.

The rounded edges feel cool to the touch, and the color is perfectly contoured and flushed throughout.

Display

The Super Retina XDR displays with Always-On and ProMotion technologies are engineered to help you accomplish more on your Pro iPhones. Both models come with the latest-generation Ceramic Shield that is 2x tougher than any other smartphone. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max features the thinnest borders ever on iPhone, with a larger viewing area to read more lines in an email, more screen real estate to watch your favorite shows, and more.

Performance

Powered by the A18 Pro chip, and built for Apple Intelligence (which will be rolled out later this year), the Pro lineup boasts a design that has an improved heat dissipation and efficiency for up to 20% better sustained performance. The new 16-core Neural Engine is said to power an incredibly fast and efficient on-device performance for Apple Intelligence.

Graphics are hyper-realistic on the Pro lineup, thanks to the 17% increase in total system bandwidth and the 6-core GPU being 20% faster than the previous generation.

iPhone 16 Pro Camera Control

Camera Control

Looking at the Pro lineup, it certainly feels like it was made for photographers. The introduction of the Camera Control situated along the left side of the iPhone simulates an actual shutter button of a camera – only better.

A single click opens up the Camera app by default, and the smooth sapphire crystal texture makes it easy to access the Camera Control simply by touch. Another click will snap a photo, and a click and hold records a video up to 4K 60fps in Dolby Vision. What’s super intuitive about the click and hold, is that the moment your finger is lifted off the Camera Control, the video immediately stops recording. Mindblown.

If you often tweak your camera settings, you’ll find this incredibly useful. Lightly pressing the Camera Control twice brings up quick access to camera features such as exposure, depth of field, zoom, cameras, Photographic Styles, and tone. Sliding the tip of your finger on the Camera Control brings up zoom options, making it easy for you to snap a photo or video in a matter of seconds.

If you prefer different settings such as a lighter touch on the Camera Control, or the speed to detect a double light press – you can customize the gestures in Settings > Accessibility > Camera Control.

New 48MP Camera

Both iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max comes with a new 48MP Fusion camera, with zero shutter lag. Freezing the exact moment when you press the shutter button, is something that all of us could only dream of in the past – and now, with zero shutter lag, this is made possible. The Pro lineup comes with the 5x Telephoto camera, and better macro photography.

The A18 Pro chip powers the new 48MP Fusion camera, giving you the option to capture 4K 120 fps in Slo-Mo more or the normal Video mode. You can also start recording a video, hit pause, re-frame, and resume recording – perfect for creators.

Spatial Photos and Videos

You can now capture Spatial Photos and Videos, so you can relive memories on Apple Vision Pro with ease.

The Action Button returns to the iPhone 16 Pro lineup, and customizing your experience with your iPhone is made even easier. Switch from Silent and Ring modes to different Focus modes, Flashlight, Voice Memo, Translate and more with the Action Button.

Gaming with Game Mode

Hardware-accelerated ray tracing is now 2x faster, for super realistic light sources and reflections when gaming. Game Mode in iOS 18 pushes more consistent frame rates, while allowing your AirPods, game controllers, and other wireless accessories extremely responsive.
