Huawei Mate 40 Pro Ring Light Case Review: The light that goes where your phone goes

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro (available on Lazada and Shopee) Ring Light Case is designed specifically for one phone only. As its name implies literally, it is a Mate 40 Pro smartphone case that comes with a right light.

DESIGN
Its design is pretty clever. The ring light reside around the case’s rear opening for the Mate 40 Pro’s circular camera module.

Consisting of 54 LED lights, the ring light offers great fill in whether you are shooting selfie or portraits of your friends.

PRICE: $98
WEIGHT: 42g

Before we start, do note that you have to be using the native camera app of Mate 40 Pro in order for the ring light to work.

A lone button sited just below the rear camera opening lets you control the ring light. Toggle the button downwards to flip up the ring light if you are shooting selfies.

Press the button once to turn on the light. Once turned on, pressing the button once again will toggle the ring light’s three lighting effects – mixed, cool and warm.

In each lighting effect, press and hold the button to toggle through the brightness levels of low, medium and high.

FOR
+ Selfie light wherever you go
+ Offers great fill-in for portraits
+ Powered by the phone itself

AGAINST
– Have to remove case for wireless charging
– Only available in white

You can instantly see the result for yourself when you turn on the ring light. Your face gets illuminated even when you are in a low lighting setting, as you can see below. These selfies were taken in near total darkness.

Not only does it work well for selfies, you can also use the ring light to shoot portraits of your friends or close-up shots of your dinner.

The ring light gets its power via wirelessly from the Mate 40 Pro. While this means you do not need to charge the case separately, it also means the smartphone cannot be wirelessly charged with the case on.

In terms of protection, the case only offers some protection on the top, bottom and back of the smartphone. The curved sides of the Mate 40 Pro are exposed. But this might be a good thing, if you want to apply a screen protector on the phone. Otherwise, it is something you should take note when handling the phone.

Finally, the case is available only in one colour – white. I would prefer a black case, as a white case tends to get “dirty” over time. But that’s just me.

VERDICT
If you love to take selfies or macro photos of food, the Huawei Mate 40 Pro Ring Light Case is certainly a must have.

Furthermore, until 31 Mar 2021, the Huawei Mate 40 Pro (available on Lazada and Shopee) is selling at $1,398 (usual price $1,598) and you get the ring light case for free (while stocks last).
