GPT-5 Launch in 2023: A Leap Towards Human-like AI

Siqi Chen’s claim that GPT-5 will achieve Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) by the end of 2023 has generated significant interest and debate within the AI community.

If this claim proves true, it could have significant implications for the field of AI and beyond. AGI represents a major leap forward in AI technology, allowing machines to learn and understand any task or concept that humans can. With the introduction of GPT-5, it is possible that generative AI could become indistinguishable from human intelligence.

“I have been told that gpt5 is scheduled to complete training this December and that OpenAI expects it to achieve AGI,” Chen tweeted on Monday.

It’s worth noting, however, that Chen has acknowledged that achieving AGI with GPT-5 is not a consensus belief within OpenAI. He stated that “non-zero people there believe it will get there,” indicating that the development of AGI is still an ongoing process.

Despite the potential benefits of AGI, there are also concerns about its potential impact. On the one hand, AGI could accelerate AI-enabled processes and help alleviate humans of tedious or repetitive work, boosting productivity. On the other hand, giving an AI this level of authority could have unforeseen and potentially negative consequences. For instance, the development of highly convincing human-like bots could facilitate the spread of harmful misinformation and propaganda on social media platforms.

It remains to be seen whether GPT-5 will, in fact, achieve AGI by the end of this year, but the possibility of this breakthrough raises important questions about the future of AI and its impact on society.

Repercussions of AI-power

Chen cites Yohie Nakajima’s recent tweet, in which he described an “AI founder” experiment that is “kind of blowing my mind.”

In a recent experiment, an AI was given a goal to create its next task and continued to generate and reorganize its task list as it completed them. This innovative approach has promising implications for search, but according to tech entrepreneur Siqi Chen, the potential of chatbot plugins and GPT-5 could take AI even further towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

However, the development of AGI also raises concerns about the potential consequences of endowing AI systems with such vast power. For example, Elon Musk and over a thousand other tech leaders and researchers have signed an open letter warning that unchecked AI development could accelerate the spread of false information and propaganda, suggesting that limiting progress beyond GPT-4 would be in humanity’s best interests.

While the debate on the limits of AI development continues, the recent experiment showcases the potential of AI systems to adapt and optimize their performance, hinting at a promising future for the technology.

“We call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least six months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4. This pause should be public and verifiable and include all key actors,” said the letter.

“If such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium.”
