As expected, tech giant Apple has announced its latest iPhone 13 series during its “California Streaming” virtual event this morning (Sep 15, 1am, Singapore Time).
Like the iPhone 12 series, the iPhone 13 will come in four models and three screen sizes. There is a 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini, a 6.1-inch iPhone 13, a 6.1-inch iPhone 13 Pro and a 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max.
In terms of design, all the iPhone 13 models look like their predecessors apart from re-designed rear camera modules. All the iPhone 13 models now come with ceramic shield front that makes it more durable and tougher than any smartphone glass, according to Apple.
The new iPhone 13 models also all feature Apple’s latest A15 Bionic chip, which is the fastest chip in a smartphone, according to its maker.
Furthermore, all the iPhone 13 models now use a re-designed TrueDepth front-facing camera system that has a smaller notch than its predecessors.

While the iPhone 13 and 13 mini feature aluminium body frames, the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max use stainless steel frames. In addition, while the screens of iPhone 13 and 13 mini still has a refresh rate of 60Hz, the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max feature screens with ProMotion technology with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.
Both the iPhone 13 and 13 mini sport a re-designed rear dual-camera system featuring 12-megapixel (MP) ultra-wide-angle and wide-angle cameras. But the new wide-angle camera has the biggest image sensor ever – at 1.7 µm pixels – in an iPhone dual-camera system, which is capable of gathering more light. It also features the sensor-shift optical image stabilisation (OIS) technology found in iPhone 12 Pro Max.
In the case of iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, both feature a new rear triple-camera system consisting of 12MP ultra-wide-angle, wide-angle and telephoto cameras with sapphire lens cover. However, the ultra-wide-angle camera has a wider f/1.8 aperture and new autofocusing system that allows for macro photography with a minimum focus distance of 2cm. At the same time, the wide-angle camera uses a larger image sensor of 1.9 µm pixels for more detailed photos and the telephoto camera now features a longer 3x optical zoom. Both models also feature sensor-shift OIS for sharper images and videos.
Moreover, all the cameras of both iPhone 13 Pro models now support Night mode. Other new photography modes include Cinematic mode that records videos of your subjects with beautiful depth effect with automatic focusing changes even in post-processing, and ProRes video codec for movie-quality colour fidelity.
The iPhone 13 and 13 mini will be available in five colours – midnight (black), starlight (white), blue, red and the new pink, while the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max will come in graphite, silver, gold and the all-new sierra blue.
Pricing has not been changed from the iPhone 12 series. The iPhone 13 is priced starting from $1,299, while the iPhone 13 mini starts from $1,149. But the iPhone 13 and 13 mini now has a larger starting storage capacity of 128GB, as well as 256GB and 512GB.
Available in storage capacities of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and a new larger 1TB option, the iPhone 13 Pro has a price tag starting from $1,649, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max will retail from $1,799.
Pre-orders for all the new iPhone 13 models will start at 8pm this Friday (Sep 17) on Apple Store, and the new iPhones will be available from Sep 24.
