As expected, Apple unveils its next generation software for its devices during its annual worldwide developer conference (WWDC). This year’s virtual event started with a virtual keynote event. Here are the summary of
iOS 15
Apple offers some insights to its upcoming iOS 15 for iPhones. Its video call app FaceTime now supports Android and Windows via the web. You can make a FaceTime link for others to join a video call. In other words, Apple is joining the likes of Zoom and WebEx in the video conference business.
In addition, iOS 15 will introduce Focus. It allows you to set up modes for work, personal or do not disturb. The on-device’s artificial intelligence (AI) will then decide what notifications you want to see. Even the Home Screen will be re-organised accordingly to the mode you are using.
Plus, you can now share music and videos during calls using SharePlay. You can even watch Apple TV+ shows together virtually with your friends.
Another highlight feature is Live Text. It is able to recognise text and lets you select it, copy it and paste it to other apps like Notes or WhatsApp. This feature also works with photos you already taken in your camera roll.
iPadOS 15
Pertaining to iPadOS 15, the Home Screen will become more customisable with flexible widget placement. Essentially, what iOS 14 can do is finally coming to iPadOS.
In addition, there will be a new control on top of every app for quick and easy multi-tasking options.
watchOS 8
The upcoming watchOS 8 for Apple Watch will feature a new Mindfulness app. This is essentially an expanded version of the Breathe app to help you relax. The Fitness app on watchOS 8 is also getting two more workout types with Tai Chi and Pilates.
macOS Monterey
Apple has decided to name its next desktop operating system as macOS Monterey. One major feature is Universal Control, which allows you to use a single mouse (or trackpad) and keyboard between an iPad and a Mac. This will greatly improve your productivity.
In addition, the macOS Monterey will support AirPlay to a Mac. So you can stream your favourite shows to your iMac. No need to buy another monitor!
All the new Apple software will be released this fall (or around September) with public beta available starting next month.
