A sealed OG iPhone that went up for auction recently was expecting it to sell for at least US$50,000, but it ended up going for even more than that. In fact, it set a new record and sold for almost twice as much as one that was sold just six months ago.
Last year, in August and a few months after, we saw a couple of these original iPhones that were still sealed in the box get sold at auction. One of them went for US$35,414, and the other one went for US$39,340. That’s pretty amazing when you consider that the original retail price for these 8GB models was only US$599. People really like their vintage tech, I guess.
The most recent sale of a sealed, original iPhone just blew past the previous ones – it sold to a lucky bidder for a whopping US$63,356, which is almost twice the amount of the August auction. To put it in perspective, that’s 105x the original retail price of the phone.
It’s hard to believe that just a few years ago, the seller, Kelly Green, appeared on the “Treasure Hunt Tuesday” segment of the show “Doctor and the Diva” to find out the value of her unopened iPhone, it was appraised at only US$5,000.
I knew I should have at least kept the boxes for my phones over the years.
