It can be considered as the ultimate manifestation of the phrase “don’t let your memes be dreams” that an individual is currently developing a Persona-inspired RPG centered around The Golden Girls, which is expected to be released later this year.
Joey Pagano and Chris Lindgren are the developers behind The Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX, a turn-based JRPG with a fast-paced gameplay that puts you in command of Rose, Dorothy, Sophia, and Blanche as they navigate the Miami streets, fight against waves of clowns, and maneuver through dungeons with Dark Souls-style rolling. If you’re skeptical, you can watch the trailer below to see it in action.
Pagano explained on his game development website that their project began as a joke, but has since evolved into a platform to experiment with their abilities while maintaining their sanity with their unique sense of humor.
In essence, they have substituted The Golden Girls for the gameplay of Persona 5. Their choice of theme was simply a way to test the limits of their concept and see how far they could take it.
While the announcement on Twitter about The Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX set for release later this year brought the game to the attention of many online users, the project has been in the works for a considerable period. Work-in-progress videos dating back five years can be found on YouTube, and according to Pagano’s website, there was supposed to be a playable demo of the game available in the summer of 2021.
If NBC and Disney opt not to issue a cease and desist order against Pagano and Lindgren, The Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX is expected to be released during the holiday season.
