During a press presentation at the Warner Bros. Studio lot, Warner Bros. Discovery revealed the name and plans for its new streaming service, Max, which will combine HBO Max and Discovery+ into a single product. Variety was the first to report on this announcement.
Max was first announced in August 2022, shortly after the completion of the merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery. The service was originally scheduled to launch in the summer, but the timeline was moved up to a May 23rd release date. CEO David Zaslav confirmed the name of the merged service during the presentation.
JB Perrette emphasized the importance of distinguishing HBO from the HBO Max name and treating it as a separate entity within the product experience. Casey Bloys also announced a slate of original programming for Max, including shows in the DC universe like The Penguin, a new The Big Bang Theory series, and unscripted series featuring notable personalities.
Kathleen Finch discussed the significance of WBD’s linear channels to Max and revealed that content from networks such as Food Network, TLC, HGTV, and others would be available on the platform after their initial airing. Perrette also shared details about the new Max streaming user interface and pricing tiers. The ad-lite Max plan is priced at USD$10 | SGD$13.26 per month, the ad-free plan at USD$16 | SGD$21.22 per month, and an “ultimate” ad-free tier at USD$20 | SGD$26.52 per month.
