Fitbit Recalls 1.7M Smartwatches Over Burn Hazard Concerns

Fitbit just recalled 1.7 million smartwatches because of a burn risk, as the lithium-ion battery inside can overheat, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Wednesday. A million of these risky watches were sold in the US, and around 693,000 were sold internationally, according to the commission’s recall statement.

People have been reporting that their Fitbit smartwatches have overheated, with 115 reports in the US and 59 internationally. Sadly, two out of 78 US burn injury reports were actually third-degree burns. And, 40 people from other countries have also reported burns. A lot of people wear these watches to bed to keep track of their sleep.

The recall affects the Fitbit Ionic Smartwatch. If you have one of these, you might want to check if it’s one of the affected models – they come in four color combinations: slate blue/burnt orange, charcoal/smoke gray, blue gray/silver gray, and an Adidas special edition in ink blue/silver gray. To see if your watch is part of the recall, look for the model number “FB503” on the back of the device near where the band connects.
