Qi2 Magnetic Wireless Charging Based on Apple’s Magsafe Technology Announced

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has announced the Qi2 standard, which will offer a new Magnetic Power Profile based on Apple’s MagSafe technology for iPhones.

The new standard will enable faster and more efficient wireless charging and will support charging new form factors. Qi2 is expected to go on sale in late 2023 and will be “MagSafe for everything”, standardising speeds and compatibility.

It is based on a Magnetic Power Profile provided by Apple and will allow for higher charging rates, supporting new product form factors such as AR/VR headsets and magnetically attaching accessories such as extra batteries.

Qi2 is expected to support charging speeds beyond 15W and could allow third-party chargers to charge MagSafe-compatible iPhones at 15W.
