Hello, Mac Studio with M4 Max and M3 Ultra

In a week of fun airy updates, Apple also just released the new Mac Studio, featuring M4 Max and the new M3 Ultra chip. Here’s all you need to know.

Mac Studio with M4 Max

Built with the world’s fastest CPU core, the new Mac Studio with M4 Max is made to handle the most complex workloads. Mac Studio with M4 Max features an up to 16-core CPU, an up to 40-core GPU, over half a terabyte per second of unified memory bandwidth, and a Neural Engine that is more than 3x faster than M1 Max. Simply put, Mac Studio with M4 Max is up to 3.5x faster than Mac Studio with M1 Max. Insane.

In a similar vein to the new iPad Air with M3, the GPU in M4 Max brings Apple’s advanced graphics architecture to Mac Studio for the very first time. This includes dynamic caching, hardware-accelerated mesh shading, and a second-generation ray-tracing engine for even better content creation and gaming.

Mac Studio with M3 Ultra

Now, this, is truly remarkable. Mac Studio with M3 Ultra takes complex and demanding workflows to a whole new level. It delivers nearly 2x faster performance than M4 Max in complex workflows that leverage fully on the high CPU and GPU core counts. Mac Studio with M3 Ultra is up to 2.6x faster than Mac Studio with M1 Ultra. Just think about that for a second.

Mac Studio with M3 Ultra starts with a whopping 96GB of unified memory, and can be configured up to 512GB, and up to 16TB of ultrafast SSD storage. This allows you to keep content and data locally, without the need for external drives. !!!

  • Up to 1.1x faster basecalling for DNA sequencing in Oxford Nanopore MinKNOW, when compared to Mac Studio with M1 Ultra
  • Up to 1.4x faster 8K video rendering performance in Final Cut Pro, when compared to Mac Studio with M1 Ultra

Thunderbolt 5

The new Mac Studio comes with Thunderbolt 5 ports that deliver transfer speeds up to 120 Gb/s, up to 3x faster than the previous generation. Thunderbolt 5 allows you to connect an external expansion chassis with higher bandwidth and lower latency. M3 Ultra also allows Mac Studio to drive up to 8 Pro Display XDRs at the full 6K resolution. Mac Studio also comes with a 10Gb Ethernet port, an HDMI port, an SDXC card slot on the front, and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
