New Apple Watch Series 7 sports larger and tougher display but availability unknown

Along with the iPhone 13 launch, the Apple Watch Series 7 also made its debut during the “California Streaming” virtual event this morning (Sep 15, 1am, Singapore Time).

There is no major re-design like the rumour mills claimed. But the Apple Watch Series 7 does sports some new looks including a larger display that literally goes to the edge of the case.

Apple claims the bezels around the display are only 1.7mm, while the always-on Retina display is up to 70 percent brighter. The larger display allows the Series 7 to offer two larger font and a new QWERTY keyboard for easy typing by either tapping or swiping.

In addition, the front crystal of the Series 7’s display is 50 per cent thicker than that of Apple Watch Series 6. Thus, the Apple Watch Series 7 is more crack resistant and also certified IP6X for dust resistance. It is said to feature 18-hour battery life and 33 per cent faster charging, thanks to a new USB-C cable and charging architecture.

The Series 7 now comes in two sizes of 41mm and 45mm – 1mm bigger than the Series 6. But all the previous watch bands are still compatible.

Two new watch faces are introduced for the larger display in watchOS 8. For instance, the new Contour face takes the dial right to the edge of the display. Plus, there are new cycling, workout and fall detection features in watchOS 8.

The Apple Watch Series 7 will have five colours of midnight, green, starlight, red and a new blue for its aluminium version, while the stainless models will come in silver, graphite and gold.

The rumoured flat sides of the new Apple Watch might have fallen flat on its face. But the rumours of its delayed availability are true.

The Apple Watch Series 7 is the only product announced this morning that does not have an availability. Apple said it will be available later this fall, which should be around Oct or Nov.

And while the Apple Watch Series 7 will start from US$399 in the US, there is no local pricing yet as well.
